Why are there so many different spellings for the Smokies? Here's one explanation I found from the Bryson City Chamber web site which may help to clear some of the confusion, or not:

Which is it? The Smoky or Smokey Mountains?

Both are common spellings. But if you want to be correct about it, spell it the way the National Park Service does — the Great Smoky Mountains.

Correct spelling is particularly important on the internet, where a Google, Yahoo or MSN search for "Smokey Mountain Vacation Guide" or "Smokey Mountain cabin, motel, bed and breakfast, or campground" might produce disappointing results.

Smokey the Bear, on the other hand, spells his name the other way. And if you're wondering about "Smokeys", "Smokys" or "Smokies," they're all correct.
